One of the sites being proposed for a
WGBH Children's Park is one of the most significant and visible waterfront open spaces in all of Boston. The Metropolitan District Commission's Charles River Esplanade is a locale cherished by many, in its prominent location adjacent to the Hatch Shell. If this site is developed for the park, its visibility and significance are matched by the quality reputation and mission of WGBH to inform, inspire and entertain. If implemented, the proposed park is intended as a landmark destination for both children and adults.
In order to explore the opportunities provided by other creative children's environments, examples across the world were researched, and several sites were visited in New York and Boston. However, a prototype similar to the goals of this unique opportunity and project really does not exist. The idea behind the park is to help children better understand their environment through play, discovery, and activity. While still in the schematic phase, some of the possible elements of the park may include berms, walls, water features, discovery trails, mazes, amphitheaters, fences, gateways, and structural elements.
