Neighborhood Improvements through Capital Expenditure
Various Locations throughout Boston, MA

Client
Boston Department of Neighborhood Development

The NICE (Neighborhood Improvement through Capital Expenditure) Program, administered by Boston's Department of Neighborhood Development, is aimed at providing interested neighborhood groups with the means to implement enhancement projects in their community. Funding, which is typically below $50,000 in construction costs, provides applicants improvement money for projects on any City of Boston or publicly owned land. Projects range in size and scope from median beautification projects, to community gardens and neighborhood pocket parks.

Working from a community's application, Copley Wolff Design Group translates the community's wishes into a buildable reality. CWDG's work products often include plans, details, and plant lists. The process for a NICE project draws on CWDG's strong knowledge of local building code, its working relationships with municipal services such and Boston Water and Sewer Commission, as well as its construction management skills. To date, CWDG has completed several NICE projects and continues to design new ones. A sampling of the projects CWDG has worked on includes:

Tthe Charlestown Median is a traffic island in a busy locale. To be maintained by the Charlestown Garden Club, the beautification includes an array of planting.

For Fern Square, the community desired a new pathway system, repaired fencing, a commemorative archway, and plantings for their small neighborhood pocket park.

Parson-Bradford Jones Park is a traffic island in a residential area that was enhanced by ornamental plantings.

The West Roxbury Time Capsule project consists of a flagpole, benches and planting to create a space appropriate for Memorial Day activities as well as the placement of a time capsule to be opened in 25 years time.

Additional projects include the East Boston Community Rockies Garden, as well as several clocks and commemorative flagpoles throughout the City of Boston.
