The First Church of Christ, Scientist in the Back Bay of Boston is a nationally known, landmark-landscape created in 1975 by the Church and I.M. Pei and Partners with Peter Walker. In an effort to enliven and accommodate the thousands of children and visitors that visit the site, the Church and a team of designers including Copley Wolff Design Group has embarked on a reprogramming effort to inject color, whimsy, history, culture and message into the Church's operations and activities.
CWDG was involved in the redesign and reprogramming of the famous display fountain at the head of the reflecting pool. The fountain display was originally only intended for visual drama, but has slowly been engendered by City residents and their children as a splashing fountain during hot summer days. Since 1975, thousands of kids with their families have made this space their summer hangout. Now second-generation children are brought to the fountain by parents who grew up with this important city asset. The redesign increased the pool's safety surfacing added new lighting and exciting water display options to the traditional arched circle of jets.
CWDG was recently involved in the design and production of outdoor seasonal staging for the Church. Movable and expandable staging was designed featuring banners, pendants and inflatable feature elements to serve as a main component of the envisioned "soulstice" festival. These elements will be located throughout the Christian Science Plaza in Back Bay Boston and will be manipulated and adjusted to accommodate changing entertainment programs and seasonal conditions.
CWDG was also explored the possibility of a children's play and discovery garden at the Church. CWDG designed a discovery play experience with natural elements and shapes of stone, plant material, graphics, and lighting that integrated the Church's message in the landscape.
