Copley Wolff Design Group developed a Neighborhood Improvement Plan for the community of BallardVale in Andover, Massachusetts. The plan originated from the community's desire to develop a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists. Through four community meetings, moderated by CWDG, community issues were identified and a streetscape program was developed.
Three different levels of streetscape were developed, depending upon various combinations of road classifications, land uses and pedestrian conflicts. The commercial/central public space area required the highest level of design treatment while the quieter residential side streets required a much different approach to design. Chosen components of the streetscape had to be sensitive to BallardVale's Historic district and included historic light fixtures with opportunities for
banners and plantings, site furniture, street trees, signage, sidewalk material upgrades, crosswalk/intersection treatments and traffic calming devices.
