à Creating strong, identifiable campus gateways
à Reclaiming the core of the campus for pedestrians
à Consolidating and relocating parking to maximize
convenience and minimize impact
à Blending historic and modern elements into a distinctive campus identity
Phase I, completed in 1997, replaced a parking lot with an inviting pedestrian entrance to campus. Students enter through a ceremonial gateway with restored wrought-iron gates and new masonry columns. A curvilinear brick and concrete walkway with benches and lighting leads them to a semicircular plaza overlooking the Quadrangle.
In Phase II, Copley Wolff Design Group redesigned the main Quadrangle. New walkways create easy circulation and natural gathering places. Benches and sitting walls invite students to make the space their own, and new plantings soften the Quadês hard outlines and connect its landscape to the surrounding hills. With the completion of Phase II in 1998, the heart of the campus became a more welcoming, comfortable, and memorable place.
As part of design services, Copley Wolff Design Group created an abstract design based on the cast-iron gates that welcome students to the campus. This emblem appears throughout Phases I and II, etched in limestone and granite. To knit the campus together, the design was integrated it into walls, paving patterns, and light pole bases. The College has even incorporated the design in its web site.
Phase III included a new quadrangle to be shared by the academic, recreational, and residential sections of the campus. By moving parking to another location, this critical area was freed for student use. The program for this area included walks, gathering places, open lawns, an informal grove of trees, and areas for volleyball and Frisbee. Phase III was completed in 1999.
