Located on a nine acre mill site along the Quinebaug River in Southbridge, Massachusetts, the Southbridge Office and Conference Center joins a modern conference facility to a late 19th-century mill building. The addition houses office, education and group meeting facilities, while the mill complex was converted to a state-of-the-art hotel for conference attendees.
The project posed a complex set of site problems. Design studies, sketches, and 3D modeling techniques were employed at all stages of the design process and resulted in both functional and aesthetic site improvements.
The entry design features pavers, lighted bollards, seating, and signage. The ground-floor public spaces have access to a pedestrian dining terrace that adjoins a grassy meadow to the south of the complex. A major feature of the complex's design is an open-air courtyard linking the conference center with the hotel.
