Architects, landscape architects, planners and visual communication experts
describe their collaboration. We describe a 9+ acre mill site along the Quinebaug
River in Southbridge, Massachusetts where the architects joined a modern conference
facility to a late 19th-century mill building to create the
Southbridge
Hotel and Conference Center. We describe how the lead designers of
each firm sketched together to help shape the space, landscape and environmental
graphics to ensure uniformity and balance. This is part of the Women in Design
series at Build Boston.
B11 Integrating Art into the Landscape
10:30am-noon - Wednesday, November 13, 2002
Lynn Wolff, ASLA, CWDG, Boston, MA
Ricardo Barreto, Director, Urban Arts Institute, Boston, MA
Esther Kaplan, Commissioner, Boston Office of Cultural Affairs, Boston, MA
Katherine Sloan, President,
Massachusetts
College of Art, Boston, MA
Works of art have traditionally been stand-alone elements and rarely integrated
with the design process or the design of the landscape. Today, landscape architects,
while designing many artful landscapes, are also being asked to team with
artists to design landscapes with integral art elements. We explore different
options, current practices for integrated site design and art proecesses,
artist-selection, contractual arrangements, liability issues and the implementation
and construction of art in the landscape.
C21 Open-Space Developments- A Case Study

John Copley, ASLA, CWDG, Boston, MA

An architect, developer and town planner describe how designers, construction
professionals and regulatory agencies can work together to serve each other's
goals. The Hopkinton experience we describe in this session is now over 10 years
old and has resulted in, among other benefits, setting aside over one square
mile in new protected open space.
